History of Levi Men 501

Levi Men 501’s started out life in a humble way. They did not originate in a boutique in Paris, or fall off a catwalk, or descend from outer space in a bubble of coolness (although sometimes I wonder!) The history of Levi Men 501’s begins over a hundred years ago...



In 1853, many hundreds of people had upped sticks and moved to California in the hope of finding gold and making their millions. It was a hard life; sweltering heat and primitive living conditions made for a tough existence. Gold prospecting was even harder work back then; there was no fancy machinery or metal detectors-all the hopeful gold seekers had were basic tools and determination.



Levi Strauss, a German immigrant, left New York and headed for San Francisco with the intention of opening a branch of his brother’s dry goods business there. He had brought quantities of canvas to sell for tents and wagon coverings-much to the disappointment of the miners, who complained that they couldn’t find trousers strong enough to withstand the rigors of their hard labour.



The intrepid Mr. Strauss made his canvas into waist overalls for the prospectors. They sold well, but the fabric was harsh and tended to chafe the prospectors-not what you want in 40 degree heat! So Levi substituted the canvas for a twilled cotton cloth called “Serge De Nimes” which came from France. This fabric later became known as Denim, and is the origin of the denim we know and love today.

The new trousers revolutionised life for the early Americans. The fabric was hard wearing as well as comfortable, and was well able to stand the tough life of the settler. As well as being strong fabric, the trousers were well made and sturdy, featuring rivets to make them stronger. These copper rivets were introduced 20 years after Levi Strauss’s arrival to America, when he was approached by tailor David Jacobs whose idea it was to use rivets to reinforce the areas under the most strain. The pair patented the use of these rivets in their popular trousers-the first time this had ever been done. For all denim fanatics, May 20 1873 is the official birthday of the “blue jeans”.



For many years these revolutionary blue jeans were the chosen uniform of any hard working country man who had a job to do, being both practical and very hardy. It was not until the 1960s and 70s however, that the jeans craze really took off. A much more casual dress sense was on its way in-and it still hasn’t gone away! The humble beginnings of the Levi 501’s took on a worldwide market, and although many other manufacturers started making their own jeans the well known Levi brand was already well established.



The history of Levi men’s 501 jeans is a triumphant one. Over 100 years since the company first started the production of jeans they are still best sellers today-proving that they really ARE the best!
